Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an avenue for action. DuVernay was taught to be socially aware through her mother. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. As studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the house and examining the garbage of one of members of the juries. As a result of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at small production studios right after she graduated from school. In 1999, she established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
